SEVENTY YEARS OF A GOOD RUN COMING TO AN END

Many of you will be able to relate personally to this. The seventy-year-long good run coming to an end for me is the joy of playing ball. I started playing on a team at age 9 and still do at age 80. No, I am not retiring. But much of the joy of the game has gone. The reasons to play now are camaraderie and to give myself something to do. Before now, the reason to play was that the game itself was fun, independent of team affiliation or outcome. I loved chasing the ball, catching the ball, throwing the ball, hitting the ball and running the bases. Sadly, those tasks are no longer joyful. In fact, they feel more like obligations than activities I want to pursue for fun. The problem does not stem entirely from a gradual decline in performance caused by age. Everyone, including major leaguers, experiences gradual decline. With age, you run slower, throw less hard and hit less hard. We all have to learn to live with that. Unfortunately, I didn't see coming that we would also think less fast! Still, despite the diminution in my absolute performance over the decades, my basic skill package remained intact. I could still run, catch, throw and hit – just on a smaller scale. Unfortunately, at age 80, I have transitioned from gradual decline to precipitous decline. By that I mean I can no longer produce those skills reliably, not even on a smaller scale. Now they are becoming intermittent. That is not to say that I didn't make any bad plays for 70 years. Of course I did but they were unexpected outliers. I still anticipated my inputs would be rewarded joyfully. Now I don't, at least, not regularly, and that takes a lot of the fun out of the game. In fact, it replaces it with fear of failure. And that is no fun at all. I know there should be a land in my mind where I could possibly adjust my standards and still produce joy with less competence. After all, it was I who once said, “Any play made after age 80 is a good play.” Thankfully, I can still make some of the plays, some of the time. Now, I just have to adjust my thinking and my feelings to accommodate the new reality. So far, it is still a work in progress

MESSAGE FROM RICK LINDSAY'S WIFE:

Thank you so much to everyone for all your prayers! We are so grateful for them.

Rick is at Brandon Regional, getting excellent care. We couldn't have asked for better.

He was extubated yesterday morning, and able to talk in a whisper, then a bit better last night.

He is having a  test done today to determine when he can eat and drink again, as well as an MRI. His CT scan yesterday was clear, Praise God!

He is doing amazingly well, considering what he went through. We will have to await test results for next steps.

Thank you again for keeping him and our family covered in prayer.☺️

I was playing softball fairly well as I kept playing more games I in started getting unusually out of breath plus my biceps would be painful. I just figured that my conditioning needed improvement so played another game. The short breath and pain in my chest reoccurred. I picked up my equipment and went to doctor. Becareful and don’t take chances, it may be your last
